Scope of Practice

Success in Nevada State Senate!

Good afternoon, everyone! I hope your summers are going splendidly. I have some fantastic news to share with you all. The Nevada State Senate recently passed into law the bill allowing medical assistants to administer medications under the supervision of a physician. You’ll remember that Nevada State Society President Carol Cohen and I worked on such matters earlier this spring (See “Right-to-practice Issues in Nevada“). We were hopeful that the bill would pass the Senate, and that hope proved justified. You can review the final text of the bill at http://www.leg.state.nv.us/Session/76th2011/Bills/SB/SB294_EN.pdf. Thank you again for all of your support!

  1. So under other state laws such as GA what is the difference between CMA and a Medical Assistant giving medication. Again as I understand the information, please correct me if I am wrong, but once you obtained the title CMA you can practice in a Doctors office under their supervision to give medication or do we have to have a RN present to give medication out as well.
PHoebe Putney Policy is that no medication is to be deilvered without a physician on site. Does this from what I am reading mean that we must also have a RN on site to deliver medication.

    1. Thank you for your question. Medical assisting laws vary from state to state. However, under no state law is there a requirement that a registered nurse, as well as the overseeing/delegating/supervising physician, be on the premises when the physician has delegated the administration of medication to a medical assistant working under his/her direct supervision.

A few states do have educational and/or credentialing requirements for medical assistants who are delegated certain types of administration of medication by a physician. We won’t know the specifics about Georgia or Nevada law until the respective state boards of medical examiners issue regulations pursuant to the legislation.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know how I can be of further assistance.
